Protect Yourself from getting Hacked

Is it easy to hack email accounts technically?
Answer is No.
It is difficult to hack email accounts but the hackers makes trap in which user fall and lend up losing their email accounts.
They make trap such that we lend up giving our own passwords.
Below are methods how hackers set trap and solutions to it.

Website Phishing (Spoofing):

In case of Website Spoofing or Phishing the attacker creates Website with same GUI look and feel as original website but the URL of Website is different. This website is created for cheating purpose.
Eg:An attacker creates a spoofed web page of let say hotmail.com which would be exactly same as hotmail ,so people believe it as original website.Their main intention is to get password,if user enters his username and password unknowingly on login page he gives away his id and password to attacker.

Solution:
  • Never access email or secured site(where login required) other than original site
  • Type URL in address bar never visit form any hyperlink.
  • Check address bar whether the address of website is proper eg:For instance spoof page would be yahooo.com in case of yahoo.com
This applies to all site where secure login required.

Key Loggers:
Key Logger is a tool, kind of a spyware which records the key activities of keyboard on your machine.Attackers installs keylogger on your machine back-door without your knowledge ,when you are installing some program if keylogger is patched with it then logger also gets installed or click on illegitimate link like tempting screen saver, spams, ads, images etc.
The logger records all activites and sends log file periodically to attacker without your knowldge. From these log files attacker extract your password and uses it.

Solution:
  • Key your PC update with antivirus and antispyware.
  • Don't click on unknown links spam links however tempting may be.
  • Scan installable file before running it.
Improper Password:
According survey conducted people use their close relative name, date of births, mobile numbers, religious significance name and digit like 1234 as password.Whenever attacker targets a specific user he understands person properly by seeing traffic activities and personal info of users studies his target properly and uses guess work to crack password or else can crack using brute forcing it.

Solution:
  • While keeping password, use random words.
  • Password must be mix of block, small alpahabets ,numerics, and special charcters in order to make it strong.
  • Whenever making any email or social networking account remember to keep your secondary email. If you haven't you could edit it whenever required. If at all you forget your password or hacked your password reset request will be send to you on secondary account.
  • Never use same passwords for all accounts.
Registration forms & Spam mails:
Most of free forums downloading sites have compulsion registration there are many fake and spams among those too which infringe with your personal details.People generally have habit of keeping same password as that of their email accounts, thus land up giving password.
Spam mails: There are instance where there are forge spam mail which call themselves from bank or support team of hotmail , gmail and ask to mail username password in order to avoid from closing accounts. No provider sends this mail they all are fake spams.

Solution:
  • Never use same passwords on registration pages as your email account, use different passwords.
  • Use some temporary email accounts not personal email accounts while registering yourself in forums etc.

As now a days the use of flash drive has increased therefore level of threats by USB viruses has also increased. In case of flash drives, viruses are easily transfered from infected PC to flash drive and vice versa.Well knownUSB virus are antorun.inf ,kinza, ravmon etc.Even if you try to open the flash drive these virus gets installed, due to auto run property.
In order to protect your computer from USB virus first disable the autoplay.

You can disable autoplay using following steps:
  1. Type gpedit.msc in Run command. Thus group policy window opens
  2. Click on Administrative template under Computer configuration
  3. Then on right side of the window open system menu
  4. Under system menu double click Turn off autoplay.
  5. In Turn off autoplay window select turn off autoplay for all drives
  6. then select enable >> apply>>OK.
  7. After this is done ,Click on Administrative template under User configuration
  8. Then on right side of the window open system menu
  9. Under system menu double click Turn off autoplay.
  10. In Turn off autoplay window select turn off autoplay for all drives
  11. then select enable >> apply>>OK.
Thus now autoplay is disable in your computer.

Everytime you insert flash drive in your computer, first scan it with antivirus before opening it.After all prevention is better than cure.

Spybot (spyware removal tool)

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too.It is a good tool as scanning is done very fast and doesnt eat up your RAM to much during scanning.

KEY LOGGER - A Malicious Tool

Introduction:

They are the spy softwares which are used to record the keystrokes made on victims system. These Keyloggers are tools that enable attacker to keep a record of the victims activities.

Common type of Attacks

Once the keylogger is installed on victims computer it can be used for following malicious activities:

  • Accessing the content of confidentional emails and documents.
  • Recording password, credit card numbers, accounts, ID’s, etc.
  • Pilfering software programming code.
  • Finding out vital information regarding tender price and future business plans.
  • Capture screen shots
  • Privacy invasion
  • Steal passwords and other intellectual property

Working

Keyloggers originally began as a tool for playing pranks on unsuspecting individuals but they soon began to use for a number of malicious purposes. The working is as follows:

1. The keylogger is installed on target victim through deceit or disguise. Some of the popular methods of doing this are as follows:

i.E-mail: Sending Keylogger file as an attachment to email addressed to victim. The problem with this method is that most often, the victim may not open the infected attachment.

ii.Auto run CD-ROMs: Burn the Keylogger onto a CDROM and then use the auto run facility of the CD to automatically execute /install the Keylogger, the moment the CD is inserted into the tray.

iii.Instant Messenger: It is also possible to send the Keylogger disguised it looks like a normal, legitimate file.

iv.Physical Access: Physical access to victim system gives an opportunity to attacker to install sever part of Keylogger manually.

v.EXE Binders: These binders are devices that allow user to bind two .exe Files together into one file, in such a way that there is no effect in working of either two files .So, the attacker binds or conceals the Keylogger inside a legitimate .EXE file. The container .EXE file is usually chosen to be irresistible to the victim, such as pornography videos or greeting cards .The Keylogger gets hidden inside these tempting file and when the victim opens the combined file, while the pornography or greeting card is being shown on screen, the Keylogger is being installed in the

2. The key logger once installed works in the background of the victims system and records all keystrokes or screenshots in log file .The recorded information is then automatically mailed to a predefined email address fed in by attacker on regular intervals.

3. It is also possible to configure an auto destruct features into a Keylogger which will automatically get destroyed at a predefined data and time, leaving a little evidence behind.

Detection

The following are some of the most common technique of detecting the presence of a keylogger on victim’s computer:

  • Suspicious Open ports: It is difficult to detect as port opens only when log file is mailed, this is the main difference between a keylogger and Trojan .In case of Trojan port is open all time
  • Detection Tools: Many tools allow system administrator to detect Keylogger. Most of Anti-virus tool also look for Keylogger installation.
  • Start-up Files: Keylogger is most dangerous as it gets loaded into the memory every time the victim system boots. For this to happen, there has to be a reference to it in some startup files.
  • System files: the two system files i.e. win.ini and system.ini have sections where all programs that are referenced get executed.
  • Registry Files: There is another place to look for Keylogger program reference. All programs are referred to in the Registry key.
  • Monitoring out going Traffic: What is most dangerous about a keylogger is that it covertly emails the logged keystrokes to attacker’s preset email address. Hence by blocking all malicious outgoing email it is possible to guard against keylogger. The administrator should look for illegal activities around the external mail servers i.e. SMTP or port 25

Countermeasures

After a Keylogger has been detected, the system administrator needs to remove it from system. They can be done in following manner:

  1. There are many keylogger/spyware removal tools that can be downloaded and used to remove most common Keylogger. One should not only remove the Keylogger but also reference to Keylogger from the start-up files.
  2. Never accept or execute any files sent over mail, chat etc.
  3. Because .EXE allows attacker to join two .EXE files; the harmful Keylogger files may be embedded inside a normal harmless .Exe file. This Keylogger cannot be detected and only increase the file size by a certain bytes. Therefore is careful and only downloads software from Internet from original developer’s website.
  4. A more effective countermeasure against Keylogger activity is installing a firewall on your computer to monitor and log all port traffic. Especially SMTP port no.25 which is mail server port which is used to send log files via mail to attacker. This enables you to detect and trace Keylogger _exploiting attempts.

TROJAN - A Malicious Tool

Introduction:

A Trojan is a malicious program that, when installed on a system can be used for nefarious purpose by an attacker. Tools that allow remote administration or access to a vulnerable system, RAT’s are called Trojan. That mean after a system has been infected with a Trojan, an attacker can control nearly all hardware and software on the system be remote.

Common type of attacks:

Trojan is very hazardous tools that enables attacker to cause great damage to the target system. Some of the most common malicious attacks that can be carried out by the use of Trojan are listed below:

Trojan are most often use for stealing intellectual property (IP) data from target corporations and playing pranks hapless individuals. By installing a Trojan on a system, the attacker are able to access, delete, upload or download any file from it.Ip theft is not only very expensive but also can be used to damage the good name off corporation. This is because installation of a Trojan gives access to neatly all hardware and software on the system, it becomes open to all kinds of pranks, some listed below:

·Increase or decrease the volume when you are listening music.

·Moving the mouse towards the right when you are trying to move it to left vice-versa.

·When you type ABC, the attacker types XYZ.

·Open and close your CD tray at intervals.

An attacker can easily run malicious commands on an infected system and delete important files or even format your hard disk

Attackers can program Trojan in such a way that they use resources of your system and network to carry out attacks on predefined victim system. That means attacker can put in a Trojan that has been programmed to automatically attack the target system at a pre-fixed time and date. The attack is so planned that the victim’s believes that his own system has carried out the attack, which can involve many legal implications for corporation.

What do Trojan consist of?

Most of the Trojan consists of two parts and their operation is fairly simple to follow. Using them involves very little technical skills. The two parts are:

  1. The Server part: The part of Trojan opens up a port present on the target computer, which listens for any connections to be initiated by attackers.Obviously, it has to be installed on the victim system through trickery or disguise.
  2. The Client part: This part gives the attacker complete control over the target system. It is installed on the attacker’s system to connect the server part of the Trojan, which has been installed on victim system.

Trojan attacks can be executed by following the simple steps

1. The most difficult part of executing a Trojan attack is installing the server part of

The Trojan on the victim system .Some of the more common ways to do it is:

i. E-mail: Sending Trojan server file as an attachment to email addressed to victim. The problem with this method is that most often, the victim may not open the infected attachment.

ii. Auto run CD-ROMs: Burn the Trojan onto a CDROM and then use the auto run facility of the CD to automatically execute /install the Trojan, the moment the CD is inserted into the tray.

iii.Instant Messenger: It is also possible to send the Trojan server part disguised as a normal file over IRC or IM.Attackers generally rename the Trojan so that it looks like a normal, legitimate file.

iv.Physical Access: Physical access to victim system gives an opportunity to attacker to install sever part of Trojan manually.

v.EXE Binders: These binders are devices that allow user to bind two .exe Files together into one file, in such a way that there is no effect in working of either two files .So, the attacker binds or conceals the Trojan server part inside a legitimate .EXE file. The container .EXE file is usually chosen to be irresistible to the victim, such as pornography videos or greeting cards .The Trojan gets hidden inside these tempting file and when the victim opens the combined file, while the pornography or greeting card is being shown on screen, the Trojan is being installed in the background.

2. The server part of the Trojan, once installed on victim’s system subsequently binds

Itself to a specific port on victim system and listen for conections.Every Trojan listen for connections at A predefined port number, which is different for each Trojan .For example, the Net bus Trojan listens for connections on the preset port 12345.

3. Next, it is necessary for attacker to locate the IP address of the target system on

Which the server part of the Trojan has been installed .This step enables the attacker to connect to the infected system and control it by remote .Some Trojan are designed in such a way as to automatically mail the IP address of victim to the attacker, every time the target login on Internet.

4. Then, the attacker uses client part of the Trojan tool which installed on his system to connect to the server part of Trojan installed on victim system. The attacker connects to the present port number that Trojan uses. After establishing connection, the victim’s system lies to open to attacker to inflict almost any kind of damage.

Most common type of Trojan Available is as follows

Netbus

Back Orrifice

Girl Friend

Sub seven

Gromozon

Flooder

Droppen-Ev

Downloader-Ev

Cuteqq_Cn.exe

Detection : The following are some of the most common technique of detecting the presence of a Trojan on victim’s computer:

  • Suspicious Open ports: Its is actually quite easy to spot the presence of a Trojan on a system. As mentioned above ,the server part of the Trojan automatically binds itself to a predetermined port number.Hence,by going to the command line prompt ass simply typing the netstat –N command, you can spot whether the list of open port numbers matches the list of normally open ports, or if any of them match any of the Trojan ports. If they do, then chances are your system is infected with a Trojan.
  • Detection Tools: Many tools allow system administrator to detect Trojans. Most of Anti-virus tool also look for Trojan installation.
  • Start-up Files: Trojan proves to be most dangerous if the can get loaded into the memory every time the victim system boots. For this to happen, there has to be a reference to it in some startup files.
  • System files: the two system files i.e. win.ini and system.ini have sections where all programs that are referenced get executed.
  • Registry Files: There is another place to look for Trojan program reference. All programs are referred to in the Registry key.

Countermeasures

After a Trojan has been detected, the system administrator needs to remove it from system. They can be done in following manner:

  1. There are many Trojan removal tools that can be downloaded and used to remove most common Trojan. One should not only remove the Trojan but also reference to Trojan from the start-up files.
  2. Never accept or execute any files sent over mail, chat etc. Also do not experiment too much with Trojan because it is possible that client part of Trojan installed on your computer could turn out to be server part ,thus leaving your system open to attackers.
  3. Because .EXE allows attacker to join two .EXE files; the harmful Trojan files may be embedded inside a normal harmless .Exe file. This Trojan cannot be detected and only increase the file size by a certain bytes. Therefore is careful and only downloads software from Internet from original developer’s website.
  4. A more effective countermeasure against Trojan activity is installing a firewall on your computer to monitor and log all port traffic. This enables you to detect and trace Trojan _exploiting attempts. In addition how tempting you should never execute any files sent over you via internet.

Beat back that Trojan horse

Reboot Windows in Safe Mode
What is Safe Mode? Safe Mode is a diet version of the Standard Mode of Windows that your computer ordinarily runs. Rebooting in Safe Mode loads minimal programs and disables most device drivers that manage hardware like CD drives and printers. The result is a more stable iteration of the Windows operating system that's better suited for disabling malware while you perform a system scan. How do you use it? If you can, follow the necessary steps for a safe shutdown process and then reboot. When you restart Windows, as the screen begins to load, press F8 repeatedly until the Windows booting options appear. Select "Boot in Safe Mode" from the menu of options. Once in Safe Mode, you should be able to run your installed antispyware software with less interference from the malicious software that the Trojan brought onto your system.
System Restore
What is System Restore? System Restore strings out a safety net if everything goes kaput. Under default Window settings, System Restore saves a snapshot of your computer configuration once a day and on major upgrades that can be used to replace corrupted files. In the event of a Trojan attack, System Restore can revert Windows to a previous, uninfected state. It won't restore everything, like changes to your user profile, but it does reinstate biggies like your Registry and DLL cache. When do you use it? When purging your computer of spyware, System Restore has an optimal time and place. You wouldn't want your computer including corrupted files as the reference point of the day, so it's important to disable System Restore before you start cleaning. You can reactivate it once your system is spick-and-span. How do you use it? The paths for accessing System Restore differ by operating system. In Windows XP, disable System Restore by right-clicking My Computer and selecting Properties. Under the Performance tab, select File System, then the Troubleshooting tab, and finally check Disable System Restore. You'll be prompted to reboot. Follow these steps to uncheck the box before restoring your system. To use System Restore after scrubbing your computer, choose Accessories from the program list in the Start menu. You'll find System Restore under System Tools. This comprehensive article from TechRepublic demonstrates how to create and use System Restore in Windows Vista.
Scan with antivirus/antispyware apps
Downloading diagnostic and removal tools with an infected computer is a huge time sink--spyware can cripple your speed and Internet access. The Trojan's payload could prevent EXE files from downloading or launching. Also, malware can affect the performance of installed security software on your PC. If you store your antivirus/antispyware programs on a CD or flash drive, however, those malware-busting apps can commence their swashbuckling unhindered. Advanced users can save some time by creating a bootable DOS virus scanner that runs off a flash drive (tutorial from Ask the Geek). Which antivirus software should you get? Some of our favorite intrusion-repellants include Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6, which is worth the price (full review); Webroot SpySweeper and Spyware Doctor (the free versions identify but don't remove malware); AdAware and SpyCatcher Express (free spyware removal); and HijackThis (aggressive diagnostic tool). While none of these are Vista-compatible yet, Kaspersky and Ad-Aware plan to release Vista-ready updates in 2007. HijackThis is a powerful tool that monitors the critical areas of your computer for any significant changes. Many forums administrators will want to analyze your HijackThis log before recommending a removal plan. However, the program requires a bit of learning before you can use it effectively. You'll want to read our HijackThis tutorial before getting started.
Disk reformatting
What is it? Unlike a system restore, which rolls your operating system back to a previous configuration, disk reformatting requires you to reinstall Windows, plus all your data and applications, from scratch. This method is used to disable malware by overwriting corrupted files, replacing them with the default operating system. Disk reformatting is a time-consuming measure, and one we at CNET Download.com recommend you try after scanning and restoring your system. How do you reformat your hard disk? There are several ways to overwrite the operating system, some more complex than others. Start by backing up irreplaceable files; when they're gone, they're gone. The most traditional way to reformat the hard disk is by using a boot disk or boot CD to work around your troubled operating system and load into DOS. From there you can use a combination of command prompts (like C> format) and DOS formatting tools like Fdisk and DELpart to reinstate a clean operating system. Many of these tools will delete corrupted files from the hard disk, so they will no longer be recoverable. This useful thread on CNET's forums explores some step-by-step reformatting options. BootDisk.com provides free disk information for the gamut of Windows operating systems ("W2K" denotes Windows 2000.) Click on "DOS — Windows 9X/NT4/2000/XP Excellent Bootdisks," and then download the "custom" version of your operating system where possible. Apps like Nero and Roxio (free trials) are convenient for quickly setting up the requisite boot CD from the EXE boot file. You'll want to make sure your BIOS is set to read off the CD drive before you begin reformatting. If you've never worked with BIOS and DOS before, we recommend that you get help from someone with advanced knowledge. For a less thorough workaround, you can try reinstalling the operating system. It's a simpler approach than reformatting with DOS, but it may not be able to disable fierce malware, such as a well-developed rootkit. Begin by feeding the original installation disk for your operating system into the CD-ROM. Choose to overwrite if you're given the option, but don't choose to make repairs.
